Jakarta, LKLB News – The Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia (Menkumham RI), Yasonna H. Laoly, held a meeting with foreign delegates from the International Conference on Cross-Cultural Religious Literacy (CCRL) in Jakarta, November 15, 2023. A number of delegates encouraged Indonesia’s active role to become a center for the development of religious literacy in ASEAN.
Indonesia, which has a great social capital as a plural nation, is considered capable of promoting a holistic approach to religious literacy by involving various organizations and receiving government support.
“Indonesia is in a good position to serve leadership across the ASEAN region in collaboration with groups and institutions with a holistic approach to strengthening religious literacy and human dignity,” said the Founder and Chair of the Secretariat for International Religious Freedom, Greg Mitchell, which was attended by 27 foreign delegates from the International Conference on CCRL.
According to Greg, Indonesia has the ability to collaborate with many parties through the CCRL program.
“There is a strong interest among all the alumni participants of the CCRL program. We have never received such a large response, almost everyone asked questions in the breakout sessions and wanted to give comments,” he said.
This Lunch Meeting served as the Indonesian government’s welcome to the presence of the foreign delegates of the International Conference on CCRL.
The President of the G20 Interfaith Forum, Cole Durham, said that religious voices are important in policy-making in government. The sessions in the conference showed how religion plays a role in addressing various global challenges.
“I think cross-cultural religious literacy is something that is very much needed. Not just cross-cultural between religions, but finding ways to learn to respect each other and to make differences into something positive,” said Durham.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia, Yasonna H. Laoly, said that the International Conference on CCRL is expected to expand networks for cooperation in advancing human dignity and the rule of law to create a peaceful and inclusive world community.
“This (International Conference on CCRL) is a good forum for government officials and other stakeholders from around the world to exchange views and best practices in promoting cross-cultural religious literacy and human dignity in diverse societies,” said Yasonna.
The International Conference on CCRL was organized by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia and the Leimena Institute, involving 30 world-renowned speakers. The conference, which was part of the commemoration of the 75th World Human Rights Day, was supported by the International Center for Law and Religious Studies at Brigham Young University Law School, the Secretariat for International Religious Freedom, and the Templeton Religion Trust.
