Background

Cross-Cultural Religious Literacy

Cross-Cultural Religious Literacy (CCRL) is a program developed by the Leimena Institute in collaboration with educational and religious institutions in Indonesia from various religious and belief backgrounds. This program is a contextual approach to the idea of CCRL as presented in the article “A Case for Cross-Cultural Religious Literacy” written by Chris Seiple and Dennis R. Hoover in the academic journal “The Review of Faith & International Affairs” (Volume 19, 2021 – Issue 1) and in the book “The Routledge Handbook Of Religious Literacy, Pluralism, And Global Engagement” (Routledge, 2022).

CCRL is an approach to thinking, acting, and behaving that enables cooperation with people of different religions and beliefs (collaborative competence). This is based on an understanding of one’s own moral, spiritual, and epistemological framework (personal competence) and that of others from different religions and beliefs (comparative competence).

CCRL is founded on the belief that mutual awareness and the common good for humanity can be achieved not when religious and belief diversity is rejected or merged into uniformity, but precisely when that diversity is affirmed and managed together by its different followers through a process of evaluation, communication, and negotiation to respond to various opportunities and challenges, both in local and global contexts.

CCRL provides a framework for working with others to discuss and solve shared global challenges without sacrificing the substance of one’s own beliefs.
